Text from the free encyclopedia WIKIPEDIA may appear below to give a little background information:
*************
African elephants are the species of elephants in the genus Loxodonta (Greek for 'oblique-sided tooth'[2]), one of the two existing genera in Elephantidae. Although it is commonly believed that the genus was named by Georges Cuvier in 1825, Cuvier spelled it Loxodonte. An anonymous author romanized the spelling to Loxodonta and the ICZN recognizes this as the proper authority.[3]
Fossil Loxodonta have only been found in Africa, where they developed in the middle Pliocene.
African elephants are bigger than Asian Elephants. Males stand 3.6 m (12 ft) tall at the shoulder and weigh 5,400 kg (12,000 lb), while females stand 3 m (9.8 ft) and weigh between 3,600 and 4,600 kg (7,900 and 10,000 lb).[4] However, males can get as big as 6,800 kg (15,000 lb).
