Seller's Description

EISENHOWER - Fleetwood Cover

Fleetwood cover on the occasion of the minting of the Dwight D. Eisenhower silver dollar. According to a Press Release from the Bureau of the Mint, "The first strike of the Eisenhower silver dollar coins takes place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 31, 1971, at the United States Assay Office, 155 Hermann Street, San Francisco, California. The Treasury Department’s Assistant Secretary for Enforcement and Operations, Eugene T. Rossides, and the Director of the Mint, Mary T. Brooks, will launch the first strike of the 150 million silver dollar coins authorized for minting."

The cover is stamped with the 6 cent Dwight D. Eisenhower postage stamp (Scott #1383). The cover was postmarked in Abilene, Kansas, on March 31, 1971.

The Fleetwood cachet on the cover shows Eisenhower's home in Abilene, Kansas and a portrait of Eisenhower. Above the picture of the house are the words "Eisenhower home; Abilene, Kansas" with the general's five stars to the left and to the right of "Abilene, Kansas". The cachet also has the words, "Honoring Dwight David Eisenhower, 34th President of the United States; General of the Armies".

Eisenhower' funeral service at the National Cathedral in Washington, D. C., was held on March 31, 1969. It was attended by 2,107 persons admitted by ticket. His grandson, Dwight David Eisenhower II, was born March 31, 1948.

Covers have never been sealed.
