Seller's Description

On DVD or VHS:  The remarkable story of the only three-time GRAND NATIONAL winner.....RED RUM!!

Some horses come, some horses go whose names will last for years to come...and one of them is RED RUM. Three times he won at Aintree and his spirit did not fade; he was sublime and gentle with a touch of class displayed. So let us not forget this horse...sit back and enjoy this spectacular feature that tells the RED RUM story and includes his five Grand Nationals, unique footage of his training on the sands at Southport and rare footage from his retirement home at Cholmondley.

RED RUM is quite probably the most famous racehorse of all time - the only horse to have won the world's premier steeplechase, The Grand National, three phenomenal times! His record is remarkable; a winner at
Liverpool as a two-year-old in a selling plate, he would never have been considered a Grand National horse, and yet he ran fearlessly aggressive five times in the Grand National between 1973 and 1977.

In 1973, he won one of the most thrilling Nationals of all time, when he collared the long time Australian leader, CRISP, in the dying strides; together they dominated the race in a manner that's never been witnessed before. It was an unforgettable emotional finish to an epic encounter - a race that stopped the clock and smashed the old record by almost 30 seconds!

The following year he returned to Aintree to win a second National, carrying a top weight of twelve stone. By now RED RUM was a household name much in demand as a highly paid celebrity and traveled the country making personal appearances; he had a tremendous ego and had a belief that he was the greatest...he accepted all the fuss and love because he thought he was quite entitled to it and had a huge opinion of himself! On the race course he was an aggressive street fighter but surrounded by admirers at functions, he behaved with a gentleness you would not expect by a rugged Thoroughbred.

He was second in 1975 and 1976 and at age twelve, as he approached his fifth consecutive Grand National in 1977, though no one doubted his will to win most experts readily dismissed his chance of a record third triumph. One of the supreme moments in sporting history - emotion over-flowed as the record-breaking perennial hero of
Liverpool
climaxed an extraordinary career with a unique third victory in 1977; the crowd was overcome by the enormity of RED RUM's achievement.

His accumulation of glory surely will never be equaled. At the age of thirteen, RED RUM was retired on the eve of the 1978 Grand National when he showed up with a stress fracture - a life threatening injury. The next morning the story of his sudden retirement appeared on the front pages of every national newspapers and the mass coverage offered vivid testimony of his unrivaled popularity.

A full-size bronze statue of RED RUM off near the paddocks at Aintree stands as a permanent memorial to his dauntless spirit. A web of nostalgia surrounds RED RUM's unrivaled record at Liverpool and his life has been an essay in resilience as a racehorse and later as a much loved celebrity leading the Grand National parades each year; he has given untold pleasure to everyone who's ever come into contact with him.

When tales of Aintree shall be told...the answer is RED RUM! His name stands alone in the glorious history of the Grand National and no other horse has so completely captured the hearts of the nation in the most famous steeplechase of all.

A thrilling masterpiece and tribute to the legend, RED RUM...his is truly a unique story.
