Seller's Description

On DVD or VHS:

There was no hiding the disappointment on the faces of Sonny and Carolyn Hine in February of 1997 when the announcement was made that FAVORITE TRICK had out-polled their beloved SKIP AWAY to win Horse-of-the-Year for 1997. There was a consolation prize, however: SKIP AWAY earned his second consecutive Eclipse Award as divisional champion.

For 1998, the Hines' mapped out an ambitious campaign for the gray Florida-bred son of SKIP TRIAL - one that brought him to seven racetracks and kept him racing from early February until Breeders' Cup day in November in hopes of an eventual Horse-of-the-Year title. SKIP AWAY did his part, winning his first seven starts (all stakes races) which combined with a pair of year-end wins from 1997 stretched his unbeaten string to nine. While "SKIPPY" collected the big paychecks, the Hines' savored the memories and mementos the horse brought them: dozens of trophies to go with hundreds of letters and photos from a growing legion of fans. His dominance of the division came to an end with his third-place finish in the Jockey Club Gold Cup in October of 1998 on a sloppy track at Belmont and then the following month with his sixth-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Classic but those losses didn't prevent SKIP AWAY from earning the long awaited Horse-of-the-Year title.

A winner of 18 of 38 starts and in the money in 34 of those races, SKIP AWAY earned $9,616,360 during his career, only $383,455 away from North America's all-time leading money earner, CIGAR; even a third-place finish in the Breeders' Cup would have put him over $10 million and past CIGAR's record, but it was not to be.

AN INCREDIBLE THREE-HOUR SALUTE TO THE GREAT SKIP AWAY...27 RACES IN ALL...FROM START TO FINISH IN THEIR ENTIRETY.

Races from his earliest season in 1996 include:

The Florida Derby, Blue Grass Stakes, Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont, Ohio Derby, Haskell, Travers, Woodbine Million and Jockey Club Gold Cup

Through his 1997 season:

Donn Handicap, Gulfstream Park Handicap, Texas Mile, Pimlico Special, Massachusetts Handicap, Whitney, Woodward, Jockey Club Gold Cup, Breeders' Cup Classic

To his final year of racing in 1998:

Donn Handicap, Gulfstream Park Handicap, Pimlico Special, Massachusetts Handicap, Hollywood Gold Cup, Iselin Handicap, Woodward, Jockey Club Gold Cup and Breeders' Cup Classic

Sound and durable throughout his four years on the track, SKIP AWAY accomplished things that only the great ones do: bouncing from state-to-state, from track-to-track with varying distances and weights on all surfaces - he symbolizes the ultimate iron warrior for the decade of the 1990's. He was syndicated for $18 million and is now standing at Hopewell Farm near Midway, Kentucky. His departure has left a void in the hearts of thousands of his loyal fans that memories can only help fill.
