Seller's Description

On DVD or VHS: SECRETARIAT's very last race...the 1973 Canadian International Turf

Complete
overage of SECRETARIAT's last race in Canada (the Grade I Canadian International Turf); see actual film footage of loyal fans and reporters anxiously awaiting SECRETARIAT's arrival at the airport - when his plane finally lands, he makes his grand entrance being lead out of the plane like an international first-class dignitary as he is happily greeted by hundreds of his admiring fans. Filled with stories of SECRETARIAT, shots of early morning work-outs, interviews with the people who trained, rode and loved him, and just the daily activities leading up to the big race. Those closest to SECRETARIAT reveal what traits they thought most admirable about him: his intelligence, honesty, friendliness and his overall good-natured personality.

There was considerable uncertainty as well as excitement in the week of SECRETARIAT's visit to Woodbine - the great horse was here but would he really run? It wasn't until three days before the race when he had his first full workout that the decision was made to run him as his owner, PENNY TWEEDY and jockey, RON TURCOTTE, flew in from New York.

SECRETARIAT made such an impression at Woodbine on the first day that he galloped over the turf course that the whole training track was shut down for one hour as stable employees of every description eagerly turned out to see the great SECRETARIAT. An unexpected fog delayed the big horse's final workout but thousands of people drawn by the presence of this magnificent horse still came out and some waited three hours just to get a glimpse of him work five furlongs over the grass course - a regal site to behold! Unfortunately it was a day of mixed emotions for RON TURCOTTE as he was handed down a suspension that day and wouldn't be able to ride SECRETARIAT in his last race - he passed the responsibility and honor to rider, EDDIE MAPLE.

Despite SECRETARIAT's might, this race wouldn't be a walkover as the eleven most established turf champs assembled to try their luck: Canadian Horse of the Year,
KENNEDY ROAD, PRESIDIAL, TRIANGULAR and BIG SPRUCE.

In the tradition of champions SECRETARIAT climaxed his career with a smashing triumph - it was an unforgettable moment and scene as SECRETARIAT thundered down the stretch for the final time with clouds of smoke billowing out from his flared nostrils like a locomotive coming down the tracks in full speed; he crossed the finish line to the crowd's maddening applause in which he went out in style AND on top! What more fitting climax could there have been for the most brilliant and successful season in the long history of Canadian horse racing.

Also included is very rare footage of the MAN O' WAR/SIR
BARTON match race which took place on October 12, 1920, at Kenilworth Park in Windsor, Ontario, and also extremely rare film footage of MAN O'WAR's 21st birthday party at his stable in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1938, in which he's presented a birthday cake - a very delightful clip that you won't find in any other feature! SECRETARIAT and MAN O'WAR, whose greatness would often be compared to each others', would both finish their race careers victorious on Canadian soil.

SECRETARIAT brought the sport of Thoroughbred racing back into the national spotlight with his breathtaking performances - he will ALWAYS be remembered as, "THE PEOPLES' CHOICE", for HORSE OF THE CENTURY, regardless of what Blood-Horse Magazine says! This priceless piece of racing history can be the next welcome addition to your SECRETARIAT collection.
