Seller's Description

On DVD or VHS:

The year is 1987 and in horse racing it has been almost ten years since AFFIRMED captured the last Triple Crown and it seemed that the drought would continue. In the Spring of 1987 ALYSHEBA an 8-1 long-shot entering the Derby had won just once in his previous ten starts but though the colt's results did not impress, his credentials did...his jockey was CHRIS McCARRON - a proven winner; his trainer JACK VAN BERG - a hall of famer; and most notably ALYSHEBA's sire was ALYDAR, the noble star-crossed legend denied three times by AFFIRMED in that last exhilarating Triple Crown season.

If breeding and good bloodlines are inherent traits of Triple Crown winners then ALYSHEBA was destined for glory...his sire ALYDAR was a superior Thoroughbred who in 1978 with AFFIRMED staged one of the most brilliant Triple Crown series in horse racing history (SEE RARE FOOTAGE OF ALYDAR AT STUD and the stretch runs of all three of his Triple Crown races from 1978). ALYDAR was the only horse ever to finish second in all three legs of the Triple Crown, now....nine years later it was up to his son, ALYSHEBA, to beat the odds and to win what his sire was denied.

WATCH ALL THREE OF ALYSHEBA's TRIPLE CROWN RACES FROM START TO FINISH! See ALYSHEBA'S gutsy 3/4-length win in the 1987 Kentucky Derby over BET TWICE; he overcame a difficult trip encountering early traffic right out of the gate and then survived a stumbling performance at the eighth pole...he was literally knocked to his knees in the heat of the stretch drive, got back up when any other horse would've had a perfect excuse just to flatten out, give up and get beaten by 4-5 lengths but he just wasn't gonna get beaten. It was an incredible comeback...rarely does a horse have the kind of trouble that ALYSHEBA had during the stretch run of the Kentucky Derby but had enough heart to recover enough to win it! His win came just in time as he was developing the reputation as a bridesmaid who kept finishing second or third.

The Preakness is a replay of the Derby as ALYSHEBA busted through the middle of the pack in the backstretch and ran down BET TWICE again by 3/4 of a length taking a big step to the Triple Crown. ALYSHEBA proved that his win was no fluke and that he had the stuff of which great horses are made of.

In the Belmont he would sadly finish in fourth place as BET TWICE finally avenged ALYSHEBA and ran the race of his life destroying the field by fourteen lengths - CHRIS McCARRON would admit the defeat was not the fault of ALYSHEBA but his own fault for not laying closer to the slow pace and not letting his horse run freer early in the race when he wanted to. Other famous horses who ran in the 1987 Triple Crown races shown include CAPOTE, CRYPTOCLEARANCE, GULCH, DEMONS BE GONE and GONE WEST.

ALYSHEBA, as four-year-old, on his way to being named Horse-of-the-Year in 1988, won seven of eight prestigious races from California to New York and earned $3 million. Overall ALYSHEBA's career earnings of nearly $7 million would make him one of the richest horses in racing history.

A tribute to a most courageous and beloved champion - the peoples' horse - ALYSHEBA!

AS AN ADDED BONUS...five priceless segments on ALYSHEBA are included at the end of the main feature:

1) ALYSHEBA joins the company of TIM TAM, NORTHERN DANCER, MAJESTIC PRINCE and SPECTACULAR BID in that he wins the first two, "Jewels", of the Triple Crown only to falter in the grueling 1-1/2 mile Belmont; the $5 million bonus just slips by ALYSHEBA as he failed to place in the 1987 Belmont finishing fourth

2) "ALYSHEBA: America's Horse", segment from horse racing channel, HRTV

3) A 30-minute full-length production entitled, "THE TRIPLE CROWN: ALYSHEBA...ALYDAR's REVENGE", is shown which aired just before the running of the 1987 Belmont Stakes in hopes of ALYSHEBA sweeping the Triple Crown. ALYDAR (ALYSHEBA's sire) was such an exceptional horse that in any other year HE would've been a Triple Crown winner himself if not up against AFFIRMED in each of the 1978 Triple Crown races - that now his son, ALYSHEBA, would vindicate his loss by winning the Triple Crown in his place. A very interesting feature that shows a panel of horse racing historians and other respected horsemen make comparisons of ALYDAR and ALYSHEBA...touting each horse's virtues, etc., in addition to a slew of other wonderful film footage of both horses.

4) Segment on ALYSHEBA as featured on horse racing channel HRTV's "Inside Information" series

5) Sad news of the death of 25-year-old ALYSHEBA hits the horse racing world; he was brought back from Saudi Arabia to live out his remaining years in comfort at the Kentucky Horse Park the Fall of 2008 but fell in his stall on March 27, 2009, and contracted injuries to his rear left femur that were insurmountable due to a chronic degenerative spinal condition…his connections agreed the only humane option left was to euthanize the two-time Champion.
