Deschutes Jasper Polished Display Slab: Mountain & Dendrites; Extinct Type; 110g

Nice example of Deschutes Picture jasper with a mountain scene that reminds me very much of ancient Persian and Chinese landscape paintings. It features a mountain scene with red-outlined hills with cream, mauve and buff shading. Crisp black dendrites (branched formations resembling trees or shrubs) add nice touches throughout, with the dendrites getting smaller in the further hill slopes - just as you'd expect in perspective on an actual painting. This makes a wonderful display piece that invites closer exploration. The specimen comes with a small acrylic display stand as shown in the photo. This material was dug out almost half a century ago, and had been garnering ever higher prices even before the original stocks ran out years ago. Beautiful.

Deschutes is one of the premier ""porcelain"" jaspers (so-named because of the glass-like polish which it takes). Deschutes, Morrisonite and Imperial jaspers are the triumvirate representing highest-quality jaspers, and each has been given the designation ""King of Jaspers"" by various writers. Although it is sometimes confused with the nearby Biggs jasper, Deschutes usually has tighter patterns, a different color palette and is more dense (more highly silicified). Deschutes jasper is now extinct; although the deposit was totally exhausted over 40 years ago, it is still highly sought after by collectors.
