" Like all great adventures, Deliverance (expertly directed by John Boorman) begins simply enough. Four businessmen from the city decide to spend a weekend canoeing on a wild, uncharted river. Within moments, however, it becomes apparent that this is an adventure of a special kind: a trip back into a violent, more primitive world; a fatal expedition into the dark side of nature and the human soul.
Burt Reynolds as the brawny, swaggering, crossbow-toting athlete, sets the tone early in the film when he declares his three companions, "The ability to survive, that's the game." But the game soon turns deadly as they face the challenge of the river, and an even more terrible danger that lurks within the overgrown forest.
