DEER HUNTING

" Tactics and Guns for Hunting
All North American Deer "

  • Hardback book with Dust Jacket by Norman M. Strung
  • First edition

  • " Illustrated with photographs
    and line drawings "

" The Hunter and the Deer Cycle
" On a nationwide basis, the deer hunter is the most effective management tool available.
More can be done to sustain the highest deer harvest through proper use of the hunter than by any other economically feasible management tool.
Once a herd has reached carrying capacity, it must be controlled by adequate, either-sex hunting.
If it isn't, nature will control it through disease, winterkill, starvation, lowered reproduction, or a number of other factors, and invariably at lower numerical levels than can be maintained through intelligent management. " "

" The quote is from Gene Stout, a big-game biologist with the State of Oklahoma, and his words amount to a basic tenet of wildlife management.
Elimination, removal, control, killing - call it what you will - reduction of deer population by hunting is the best route to maximum-sized herds of healthy deer in balance with their environments. "

" " To hunt a deer, you must first learn to move with the rhythm of nature, not of man.
Therein lies the challenge, and a good deal of the worth, of deer hunting.
    " "

Norman Strung has written a comprehensive guide to deer hunting which also states an eloquent and persuasive argument for the usefulness of hunters. "

" Mr. Strung begins with a chapter on game management, discussing in detail the hunter's relationship to deer control and herd maintenance.
He then focuses on the white-tailed deer and the mule deer, describing the life histories and habits of both animals. "

" A chapter on "Skills, Savvy, and Equipment" covers buying and caring for equipment, tracking and spotting a deer, aiming at it, and dragging the carcass out.
The author tells you when to use a guide and how to choose one; explains hunting laws, weapons and ammunition (including bow and arrow); and offers advice on what to wear for warmth and comfort.
Finally, all aspects of carcass care are outlined, from dressing and skinning the animal to wrapping and freezing various cuts of meat.
A variety of excellent recipes are also included. "

The book is in pretty good condition but the dust jacket is worn and torn with a piece torn off the bottom front.
There is a slit along the inside front and back cover where it was opened too wide, but the pages are all intact and no individual loose or ripped pages.
There are some light stains on the side edges of the pages, mostly visible from the side view.
