WEIRD WORLDS:
2- Nov. 1972 - GD - "Escape!" is by Marv Wolfman & Murphy Anderson, as John Carter and Dejah Thoris plan to escape their imprisonment, the Thark's chieftain vows to kill them. During the escape, John slaughters several Tharks and is told where he can find some flying ships. Dejah Thoris and Tars Tarkas' daughter (Sola) are able to fly off in one of the small ships unharmed John, now alone, battles the Thark's Army as he rushes towards the second aircraft he hops aboard, so does Tars Tarkas, determined to ground John's ship and return him to the Tharks. The two battle for control of the ship, but the impatient Chief, still on the ground, commands his army to shoot it down. With the ship being fired upon, and the two still battling on board, the aircraft is thrown off balance and Tars Tarkas flips out of it. Moving quickly, he is able to grab the underside of the landing rail. While dangling off the side of the ship, John offers his friendship and extends his hands to hoist him back aboard. The two warriors agree to be friends, but the ship crashes in the water below. When they surface, they swim to nearby land, wondering if they've just entered the "Valley of Heaven."
Pellucidar: "Slaves of the Mahars"
David Innes and Abner Perry have been captured by Gorilla-Men. They're placed in a chain gang and head to Phutra -- the home of the hideous Mahars. During their journey another captive, Hooja the sly one, makes his escape, taking Dian the Beautiful with him. Once at the buried city, they are herded to an arena where captured slaves must fight against terrible monsters. David and Abner are only witnesses to the event, however, David jumps away from the audience and into the pit to help the slaves within. The giant bull-monster runs amok by David's attack and crashes through the arena's wall. David takes advantage of the confusion and makes a daring escape, and finding a boat near a river. As he paddles away, the owner of the vessel swims after him. A huge sea-serpent suddenly emerges and David throws a spear at it. Meanwhile, the boat owner begins to climb aboard. The serpent continues his attack and together the two men defeat the creature. It seems David as met yet another friend on his strange journey through Pellucidar.
4 - Mar. 1973 - GD - "Thuvia" John Carter and Tars Tarkas enter a magnificent castle guarded by several lions (Banths). As they fight off the animals, a greater foe awaits them beyond the dark corridors of peril -- Thuvia the Huntress. When she strikes John with her whip, he explains that he is not her enemy. Trusting him, she confesses her origin, stating that the Holy Therns (a vicious cult) captured her and her scouting party, and imprisoned them. The two join Tars Tarkas, who is still battling several lions in another room. Thuvia is able to use mind control on the beasts, and the fighting subsides. freeing the other prisoners. they emerge from the winding passageways, they come upon the city of Therns which is under siege by the black pirates. One of the pirates quickly grabs Thuvia and heads for his ship. John desperately fights his way towards the vessel. As it takes off, John leaps onto the ship, and the two duel with swords. With a quick lunge, the pirate falls. John believes it is finished, however Thuvia notices that Tars Tarkas is still fighting below. The aircraft swoops down and Tars Tarkas leaps aboard. As the "battle of Gods" continues below, the three head off towards Helium, towards John's true love -- Dejah Thoris. Meanwhile, Dejah Thoris and Sola land their damaged craft in the middle of an endless desert. They meet a citizen from a hidden city who leads them through a secret doorway to a lush valley (City of Sorkan). He bestows upon them a flying lion as a gift, to help them fly home to Helium."Jubal the Ugly One"
David Innes sails back to the land of Phutra and greets his friends, but several reptilian birds have followed him home, and they're hungry. When the Mahars (Pterodactyls) attack, David slaughters and skins them. He, and his party of friends, wear the skins as cloaks and come across several ape men. One of the apes notices a human foot where a claw should be, and springs for combat. In an instant, a struggle ensues, and David's men leap out of their costumes and fight off the apes. After their triumph, they scamper deeper into the forest. David confides to them that he has stolen the "forbidden book of the Mahars." The book contains secrets of how to destroy the reptilian birds, and David hopes to end their reign. The rest of the men hike out in search of a village, while David stays behind, continuing to fight off more ape men. Suddenly, his beastly foes are being chased, and killed off, by a giant cave bear. David hides himself away from the slaughter. He then hears a woman's scream and quickly shoots an arrow at an attacking reptile. Bullseye. He walks over to the unharmed woman and finds she is the Empress Dian, the woman he loves. A tribesman steps out of the bushes and claims that she belongs to him, not David.
7 - Oct. 1973 - GD "The Trap"
David Innes stands upon a mountain searching for his friend, Abner Perry. By shouting and firing off his guns, David hopes Abner might hear him. However, the sound causes an avalanche and he slides down the slope. At the bottom is Abner, and he is safe. As they hike on, they're attacked by Gorilla-Men and taken as captives. They're dragged to a cave to meet the beast's leader, Hooja the Sly One. Hooja explains to them that he has made an alliance with the Gorilla-Men and the Mahars. He has also captured a prized woman, Dian the Beautiful. This boasting enrages David and he strikes out against Hooja. He quickly arms himself with his gun and shoots his way out of the cave, shouting at Abner and Dian to head outside as well. Within moments, all are out on the ledge of the mountain, but several Gorilla-Men are behind them and ready to fight. David continues firing his gun and Dian throws stones at the coming men. However, one more foe comes out of the cave. It is Hooja. With one last shot from David, his enemy falls and dies. The three leap from the cliff's edge and plummet into the waters below, safely. Postscript: According to legend, David and his allies would succeed in bringing an era of peace and prosperity to Pellucidar.
"Reunion!"For three days, John Carter has been a captive in the Temple of Issus. When he finally breaks his bonds, a Black Pirate enters his cell and the two confront one another. John kills him and takes his weapons. He then rescues a fellow captive, Phaidor, daughter of Matal Shang. Outside the Temple, Issus' warships are gathering. John leaps aboard one of the Navy ships and takes out more Black Pirates. Above him, more battleships are approaching, but they are from Helium and led by his friend, Tars Tarkas. The two warriors welcome each other. Then, after weeks of being apart, Dejah Thoris exits one of the ships and embraces John. They all climb aboard a ship and set a course for the Temple of Issus. In a blink of an eye, it is fired upon and destroyed. It is done, the Temple is in ruins and Issus' battleships have fallen back. In the rubble below, Issus lies dead. Later, in celebration, John Carter is dubbed "Warlord of Mars" and marries Princess Dejah Thoris, so that they can be together... for all eternity.

"Tarzan Caged!" Jane attempts to escape her Empire State Building apartment prison while animal poachers beat and drug Tarzan with intentions of putting the Lord of the Apes on display.
