DescriptionThis Listing is for a Plant Cigarette card. This card is 13 of 23. It is for the Cup Plant. The Toothpaste of the Pioneers. This plan gets it name from the water-retaining cups that form at the base of the plant's leaves. Birds and butterflies frequent the plant in order to drink from the cups. Early settlers used the resinous sap that forms on the Cup Plant as a toothpaste. The best part was, they didn't have to worry about putting the cap back on. Think this came out of a box of tea or something like that. Silphium perfoliatum, the cup plant or cup-plant, is a species of flowering plant in the Asteraceae family, native to eastern and central North America. It is an erect herbaceous perennial with triangular toothed leaves, and daisy-like yellow composite flower heads in summer. The specific epithet perfoliatum means "through the leaf."
