Seller's Description

Original circa 1914 12 1/8 inch x 9 1/2 inch Etching titled CROMWELL AT RIPLEY CASTLE (July 2, 1644).

The image shows Royalist Jane Ingleby glaring at Oliver Cromwell sleeping in a chair in the castle library, (after his attempt to commandeer the Castle) as she would now allow him a bed, with her brother William hidden in the upstair’s priest hole, following the Battle of Marston Moor which both Jane and William fought in.

Signed in the plate.

Etched by George Woolliscroft Rhead (1855-1920). George Woolliscroft-Rhead was trained in painting by Ford Madox Brown, the most important and individual artist to be associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. A painter, etcher and designer of stained glass and ceramics, George Woolliscroft-Rhead belonged to the mainstream of the Arts and Crafts movement. He was the elder brother of Frederick and Louis Rhead with whom he collaborated as an illustrator. George Woolliscroft-Rhead learned the technique of etching under the tutelage of Alphonse Legros and was elected a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1883. In later years he taught at Putney School of Art from 1896 and subsequently became director of Southwark Polytechnic Institute.

After Rudolf Lehmann (1819 - 1905). Wilhelm August Rudolf Lehmann was a German-English portraitist and author. He moved to the United Kingdom in 1866.

From “Modern Etching and Engraving: With Examples by Leading Artists” by Basil Hansard published as part works by Virtue & Co., 7 City Garden Row, City Road, London circa 1914

Image size 8 7/8 inch x 6 7/8 inch
