Seller's Description

Original 1866 10 inch x 8 1/8 inch engraving titled THE CONFESSIONAL

A young monk kneeling in front of an old monk, seated in an armchair on a podium at left, holding his hand and looking at him with a pleading expression. There is a lectern with a book at right, a censer and two books lying on the floor in the foreground at the right and an hourglass under the armchair.

Engraved by T. W. Knight (active 1840 - 1860). Reproductive engraver, working mainly for 'The Art Journal’.

After Sir David Wilkie (1785 - 1841). A Scottish painter, especially known for his genre scenes. He painted successfully in a wide variety of genres, including historical scenes, portraits, including formal royal ones, and scenes from his travels to Europe and the Middle East. His main base was in London, but he died and was buried at sea, off Gibraltar, returning from his first trip to the Middle East. He was sometimes known as the "people's painter".
