Seller's Description
Original 1952 Reprint 13 1/2 inch x 8 1/2 inch Colour Print of the 1852 Lithograph titled CLIPPER SHIP “FLYING CLOUD”
Flying Cloud was arguably the most famous of all the clipper ships. Built by Donald McKay in 1851 she proved to be one of the fastest ships afloat. Flying Cloud set the record of 89 days from New York to San Francisco; a record never surpassed. Flying Cloud was also in the China Trade. After a voyage to San Francisco; the ship would go on to China to pick up a return cargo. When the depression hit the US maritime trade in the late 1850s; Flying Cloud was sold to British interests and sailed on the London-Canton route. The clipper then joined the Australian emigrant trade with James Baines' Liverpool based Black Ball line. Flying Cloud ended its career in the lumber trade and was finally destroyed by fire at St. John; New Brunswick in 1874..
Drawn by Eliphalet M. Brown (1816 - 1886). An accomplished daguerreotypist, lithographer and historical, portrait and marine artist.
Originally produced in 1869 by Currier and Ives. The New York firm of Currier & Ives grew from a printing business established by Nathaniel Currier (1813–1888) in 1835. Expansion led, in 1857, to a partnership with brother-in-law James Merritt Ives (1824–1895). The firm operated until 1907, lithographing over 4,000 subjects for distribution across America and Europe with popular categories including landscape, marines, natural history, genre, caricatures, portraits, history and foreign views. Until the 1880s, images were printed in monochrome, then hand-colored by women who worked for the company at home.
