Original circa 1914 12 1/8 inch x 9 1/2 inch Etching titled CHARITY.
Old man sitting in doorway begging, holding his hat out for young woman to donate coin, a cloaked figure accompanying her.
Signed in the plate.
Etched by Alphonse Legros (1837 - 1911). A very influential etcher on both sides of the English Channel, Alphonse Legros moved to England permanently in 1863 on the advice of his friend, Whistler. A master etcher of figure subjects, portraits and landscapes, Alphonse Legros assumed the head professorship of etching and engraving at the Royal College in South Kensington in 1875. He later became the professor of art at the Slade School of Art, London. From this position he fashioned a standard and influenced many younger British artists, most notably William Strang, Charles Furse and Charles Holroyd. In total Legros's graphic oeuvre runs to 704 etchings.
