Seller's Description

Celebrating the Life of Dwight David Eisenhower - Fleetwood Cover - 1971

Fleetwood cover on the occasion of what would have been the 81st birthday of Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The cover is stamped with the 6 cent Dwight D. Eisenhower postage stamp (Scott #1383) and the 2 cent Allied Nations stamp (Scott #907). The cover was postmarked in in Abilene, Kansas, on October 14, 1971. Eisenhower was born on October 14, 1890.

The cover was then stamped with the 8 cent Eisenhower stamp (Scott #1394). This stamp was canceled in Denver, Colorado, in November [day and year illegible].

The Fleetwood cachet on the cover shows Eisenhower's home in Abilene, Kansas and a portrait of Eisenhower. Above the picture of the house are the words "Eisenhower home; Abilene, Kansas" with the general's five stars to the left and to the right of "Abilene, Kansas". The cachet also has the words, "Honoring Dwight David Eisenhower, 34th President of the United States; General of the Armies".

It was in Denver, Colorado, that Eisenhower married his wife, Mamie. For seven weeks in the fall of 1955, world attention focused on a small suite of rooms on the eighth floor of Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver, Colorado, while Eisenhower recovered from a heart attack suffered while on vacation in Denver.

October 14, 1971, was also the date the Eisenhower proof silver dollars were mailed from the U.S. Mint, the first day of issue of these silver dollars. It is also the date that the Eisenhower Museum was rededicated after the building of a new wing onto the museum.

November 1, 1971 was the date the Eisenhower dollar was put into circulation.

Eisenhower was the leader of the Allied forces in western Europe in World War II, and was named Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) by the North Atlantic Council (NATO’s governing body) in December 1950.

Cover has never been sealed.
