Original 1842 4 7/8 inch x 7 1/2 inch engraving titled THE CATHEDRAL (MADRE CHIESA) AT PALERMO, ITALY.
The cathedral was built in 1185 by an English archbishop of Palermo, Gualterio Offamilio, Walter of the Mill, who had been tutor to William II during the regency of his mother.
Engraved by John Henry Le Keux, Durham (1812 - 1896). John Henry Le Keux was an English architectural engraver and draughtsman. The son of John Le Keux, he was born in London and studied under James Basire III. He then worked for a time as assistant to his father. Between 1853 and 1865 Le Keux exhibited architectural drawings at the Royal Academy.
After William Leighton Leitch (1804 – 1883). A master Scottish landscape watercolour painter and illustrator. He was Drawing Master to Queen Victoria for 22 years. He was Vice President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, on Pall Mall in London, for 20 years.
