Original 1876 11 3/4 inch x 8 3/4 inch Steel Engraving titled CARDINAL WOLSEY ENTERING THE ABBEY OF LEICESTER
Cardinal Wolsey assisted by two men as he ascends steps towards a cleric surrounded by monks at the door of the abbey at right.
Engraved by Albert Henry Payne (1812 - 1902). Painter, etcher and publisher; born in London, worked in Leipzig from 1838. In 1845 Henry Albert Payne became a citizen of Leipzig, where he founded the publishing company "Englische Kunstanstalt".
From the painting by Richard Westall (1765–1836). Richard Westall was apprenticed to a heraldic silver engraver in London in 1779 before studying at the Royal Academy Schools from 1785. He was an English painter and illustrator of portraits, historical and literary events, best known for his portraits of Byron. He was also Queen Victoria's drawing master.
Beneath the main image is a smaller engraving titled Wolsey refusing to deliver the Great Seal to the nobles.
