Seller's Description
Original British 25 inch x 40 inch poster of an early thirteenth-century window of St. Thomas of Canterbury and Canterbury Cathedral. CANTERBURY for Southern British Railways.
A dramatic poster, depicting the stained glass window of St Thomas of Canterbury in Canterbury Cathedral. The oldest ones date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, and are always requiring some conservation work to keep them in great condition. There is also a small vignette showing the Cathedral front.
Poster art by Reginald Montague Lander (1913 - c.1980). A freelance commercial artist in gouache and watercolour, and a prolific poster designer. He was born in London in 1913, educated at Clapham Central School and studied at the Hammersmith School of Art. He became the chief designer and studio manager at Ralph Mott Studio from 1930-9, and worked for Government Ministries and the British Transport Commission. He produced a huge number of posters for GWR, LNER, British Railways and the Post Office, right up to the early 1980s.
Published by the Southern Region of British Railways AD 7843 A4 58/9
Printed by The Baynard Press, London
The poster is in good unfolded (rolled) condition with a 3" tear in the middle of the top edge and some tattering and small paper loss around the top right edge of the poster
