As any relationship starts, there is always uncertainty—will the mixture of the two be beneficial to the overarching entity? With Room101 joining the Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) last year, Matt Booth wanted to start the relationship off by bringing back one of the brand’s earliest lines: Daruma. Room101’s first release of Daruma was back in 2012, debuting as a follow up to Namakubi (which was also recently revived). Daruma is a Japanese term for a small, egg-shaped papier-mâché figure that is used to set goals for the year. It starts with drawing an eye on the doll when an initial goal is set, and when achieved, the second eye is placed. The Daruma will then be lit on fire to celebrate the goal being met. This is very similar to cultures that light up a cigar after sports victories, weddings, graduations, or a baby’s birth. “The return of Daruma is symbolic of the relationship with STG and Room101 moving forward. It represents the opportunity for Room101 to spread its wings which has always been our goal. And just as goals change and times change, Daruma has evolved. The Daruma of 2011 would not be the Daruma of today. The blend is correct and appropriate for now and begins a new chapter for both Daruma and Room101.” —Matt Booth

The Daruma (2023), although it has the same name, is very different from the Daruma of 2012. First, it will only be offered in one size—unlike its prior 2012 release, which had five different sizes. Next, only a very limited amount of the 2023 is being produced, making this a more limited cigar than in 2012. Finally, the make-up of the cigar differs greatly, with the 2023 being a Nicaraguan puro; compare this to the original recipe, which had an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Brazilian Mata Fina binder, with Dominican and Honduran fillers. Daruma also had some other remixes through the years. One came in 2014 (Daruma Gold), where the wrapper was changed to Mexican San Andrés. There was also a single-store exclusive—Daruma Nappy B—which had a Mexican San Andrés wrapper and a binder change to a Honduran leaf.

A cigar box is a box container for cigar packaging. Traditionally cigar boxes have been made of wood, cardboard or paper. Spanish cedar has been described as the "best" kind of wood for cigar boxes because of its beautiful grain, fine texture, and pleasant odor and ability to keep out insects. Eucalyptus and yellow poplar have been popular substitutes that were sometimes stained and scented to resemble it. Other typical woods for cigar boxes include mahogany, elm, and white oak; less-popular are basswood, Circassian walnut, and rosewood. There are several types of cigar boxes, differing both in construction and purpose. There is a growing movement of guitars and ukuleles being made from cigar boxes and other materials not usually used for musical instruments. The following are common boxes:

• Cabinet selection, slid-lid or hinged lid, typically storing 25 or 50 cigars;

• 8-9-8, round-sided box with three layers, counting 8, 9 and 8 cigars respectively;

• flat top or 13-topper, two layers with 12 on bottom and 13 on top;

• boxes of box-pressed cigars, stored two layers with same number of cigars.

• Cigar boxes, labels, and bands are considered a subject of art, with businesses specializing in them and books printed on their design, meaning, and significance. As a result, cigar boxes and their corresponding labels can be considered collectible items.
