Original circa 1880 11 inch x 7 1/2 inch Engraving titled THE BRIDGE OF SIGHS
The Bridge of Sighs is a bridge located in Venice, northern Italy. The enclosed bridge is made of white limestone, has windows with stone bars, passes over the Rio di Palazzo, and connects the New Prison to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace. It was designed by Antonio Contino (whose uncle Antonio da Ponte had designed the Rialto Bridge) and was built in 1600..
Engraved by Edward J. Whymper (1840 - 1911). Occasional draughtsman and engraver on wood, illustrator, landscape watercolourist and alpinist
From ‘Swiss Pictures’, by Reverend Samuel Manning and published in circa 1880 by William Clowes and Sons for The Religious Tract Society.
