PREFACE.
The family is the only institution, besides the Sabbath, that has come down to us from the garden of Eden. The family is composed of individuals, and the State is composed of families. The State is what the average family makes it. If the average family is quiet, orderly, and industrious, the State will be quiet, orderly, and industrious. If the average family is quarrelsome, vicious, and indolent, the State will partake of the same traits.
The Church is also made up of families - Christian families - and what the average Christian family is, that the Church will be. Church and State are two very important institutions in this world, yet they owe their existence and their character - whatever it may be - to the older and more important institution of the family.
Another thing: With the great majority of people, the greater part of their contact and association with others is in their own homes, with the members of their own families. They may see other people, and at times be much with them, but at home the current of association and influence flows ceaselessly on, day by day, and year by year.
If the home is not a happy one, then, in all probability, the members of that family are not leading happy lives, whatever snatches of happiness they may obtain outside.
If, in this little book, I can say anything that will make happier homes for any of my readers, or if I can say anything that, by making better homes, shall make more secure the foundations of the Christian Church and the Christian State, I shall have my reward.
R. T. Cross.
