Original French 11 inch x 15 1/4 inch page with printed watercolour titled COMBAT DU 26 SEPTEMBRE 1915 A LA MAIN DE MASSIGES
Massiges is a commune in the Marne department in north-eastern France. The neighbouring Main de Massiges, an elevated geographical feature shaped like a left hand, was the site of considerable fighting during the First World War.
Watercolour by François Flameng (1856 - 1923). A notable French painter during the last quarter of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th. Flameng later received renown for his painting of World War I. He was named honorary president of the Society of Military Painters and an accredited documenter for the War Ministry. His work was displayed in the Hôtel des Invalides in Paris, as well as being reproduced in news magazines.
