Formerly part of the Russian Empire, Azerbaijan became independent on 27 May 1918, following the Russian Revolution. Soviet troops invaded the country on 27 April 1920, and a Soviet Republic followed. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Azerbaijan once again became an independent state. This Famine Relief Stamp is hinged.
