Description: This decade saw the optimism of the 1920s give way to the terrible crushing years of Depression and despair. Australia in the 1930s tells what it was like to live in a Australia where over thirty per cent of workers were without a job and despaired of ever finding one, of the desperation of waiting in a queue hundreds long in the futile hope of securing the one job available, of the humiliation of Sustenance or 'susso', of grudging hand-outs from the government, of soup kitchens, of begging for food at the kitchen doors of smart restaurants. As the horrors of the Depression were gradually put behind Australia the nation embarked on yet another horror - a new war. This time Australians went to the side of Britain grudgingly, unlike the Great War when the expedition was seen as a great adventure. The photographs and text of Australia in the 1930s bring all the tragedy and suffering of that decade of life.
