Text from the free encyclopedia WIKIPEDIA may appear below to give a little background information (internal links may not work) :
*************
The red squirrel or Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is a species of tree squirrel in the genus Sciurus common throughout Eurasia. The red squirrel is an arboreal, primarily herbivorous rodent.
In Great Britain, Ireland, and in Italy numbers have decreased drastically in recent years.[3] This decline is associated with the introduction by humans of the eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) from North America. However, the population in Scotland is stabilising[4] due to conservation efforts, awareness and the increasing population of the pine marten, a European predator that selectively controls grey squirrels.[5][6]
Frans Snyders or Frans Snijders[1] (11 November 1579, Antwerp – 19 August 1657, Antwerp[2]) was a Flemish painter of animals, hunting scenes, market scenes and still lifes. He was one of the earliest specialist animaliers and he is credited with initiating a wide variety of new still-life and animal subjects in Antwerp. He was a regular collaborator with leading Antwerp painters such as Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens.[3]
