Original 1792 14 3/8 inch x 18 1/4 inch Etching and Engraving titled THE ANGEL DESTROYING THE ASSYRIAN CAMP

An angel attacking soldiers cowering on the ground with a sword of light.

Print by William Sharp (1749 - 1824). Engraver. Son of a gunmaker in Haydon Yard, Minories, London; apprenticed to Barak Longmate, heraldic engraver; worked as a writing engraver in Bartholomew Lane and from 1771, studied at the Royal Academy Schools. Became one of the most distinguished British line engravers.

After the painting by Philip James de Loutherbourg (1740 - 1812). A Franco-British painter who became known for his large naval works, his elaborate set designs for London theatres, and his invention of a mechanical theatre called the "Eidophusikon". He also had an interest in faith-healing and the occult and was a companion of the confidence-trickster Cagliostro.

Inscription: Lettered below image with title, bible reference, production detail: "P. J. De Loutherbourg R.A. Pinxt.", "W. Sharp Sculpt." and publication line: "London Published Octr. 5th. 1792, by Thos. Macklin, Poet's Gallery, Fleet Street"

The etching is in good condition with some foxing and general age-related toning and minor defects from handling.
