Alton Towers Resort, commonly referred to as Alton Towers, is a theme park, waterpark, and hotel complex in the county of Staffordshire, United Kingdom. It is the flagship attraction of Merlin Entertainments in the United Kingdom. The site opened in 1860[citation needed] with flower shows and garden tours until a theme park was built on the site in 1980.

Alton Towers Theme Park opened on 4 April 1980. Major attractions include Nemesis, Oblivion, Air, Runaway Mine Train, Congo River Rapids, Hex – The Legend of the Towers, TH13TEEN, and The Smiler.[1] In May 2014, the resort opened a brand new family area in the form of CBeebies Land, featuring several ride and attraction re-themes from the previous Old MacDonald's Farmyard area, and heavy emphasis on additional live entertainment.

The Alton Towers Waterpark opened in June 2003. It consists of several pools and slides including the Master Blaster water coaster. The waterpark, along with the adjoined Splash Landings Hotel, carries a tropical Caribbean theme with the 'Paradise Plumbers' creating the slides.

The Alton Towers estate was a former seat of the Earl of Shrewsbury. Following its sale in 1924 a group of local business men formed Alton Towers Ltd. and began to restore the gardens as a tourist attraction.[2] The park has developed progressively since the 1950s including the operation of a fairground prior to becoming a theme park in 1980.[3]

In 1990 the park was purchased by the Tussauds Group; owned by Pearson. In 2005, Alton Towers was acquired by the investment group Dubai International Capital (DIC) when it purchased the Tussauds Group for £800 million.[4] The Tussauds Group was bought by Merlin Entertainments in March 2007 for over £1billion from DIC, placing Alton Towers under their control.[5] In July 2007, the resort and park was sold to Nick Leslau and his investment firm Prestbury who now lease the park back to Merlin Entertainments to operate on a 35-year lease.[6]
