Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), thioctic acid, or lipolytic acid, is a relatively common substance in supplements increasingly used among health professionals due to its multiple properties.

Structurally a fatty acid contains two sulfur atoms. It is not a vitamin because it can be synthesized in the body from octanoic acid and is found in all cells, where they participate in biochemical processes of energy production (Helps B vitamins in converting carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into energy). Because the body's ability to synthesize this substance is minimal and from the diet (spinach, meat, liver, brewer's yeast), it is difficult to obtain it in therapeutic quantities; its intake is usually recommended as a supplement.

Its antioxidant action is given at three levels: by direct antioxidant effect (by directly sequestering free radicals), indirect antioxidant effect (it can recycle other antioxidants that have been destroyed by neutralizing free radicals, such as vitamin E, glutathione, CO -Q10 enzyme and vitamin C) and by increasing the cellular synthesis of glutathione by increasing the expression of the enzyme that limits its synthesis (Gamma-glutamyl cysteine-ligase) and by increasing the cellular capacity of cysteine (an amino acid necessary for its synthesis).

El Ácido alfa lipoico (ALA), también conocido como ácido tíoctico o ácido lipolítico, es una sustancia de uso relativamente frecuente en el campo de los suplementos que cada vez se está utilizando más entre los profesionales de la salud debido a sus múltiples propiedades.

Estructuralmente se trata de un ácido graso que contiene dos átomos de azufre. No es una vitamina ya que se puede sintetizar en el organismo a partir de ácido octanoico y se encuentra en todas las células, donde participan en procesos bioquímicos de producción de energía (Ayuda a las vitaminas B en la conversión de carbohidratos, proteínas y grasas en energía). Debido a que la capacidad del organismo de sintetizar esta sustancia es muy limitada y a partir de la dieta (espinacas, carme, hígado, levadura de cerveza) es difícil obtenerlo en cantidades terapéuticas, se suele recomendar su ingesta en forma de suplemento.

Su acción antioxidante se da a tres niveles: mediante efecto antioxidante directo (al secuestrar directamente radicales libres), efecto antioxidante indirecto (es capaz de reciclar otros antioxidantes que se han destruido al neutralizar radicales libres, como la vitamina E, la glutationa, la co-enzima Q10 y la vitamina C) y mediante el incremento de la síntesis celular de glutationa al incrementar la expresión de la enzima limitante de sus síntesis (Gamma-glutamilcisteínaligasa) y al aumentar la capacitación celular de cisteína (un aminoácido necesario para su síntesis).
