Al Pacino and John Cazale star as two men who bungle the hold-up and soon find themselves pinned inside the bank by an army of police. Trapped and frightened, they take the bank employees hostage and demand a jumbo jet to fly them out of the country. Thus begins one of the most bizarre standoffs ever filmed.
The scene of the crime is transformed into a three-ring circus attended by throngs of curious onlookers as well as an over-eager press corps determined to get the story on the evening news. The robbery, which was supposed to take only a few minutes, turns into a marathon negotiating session that lasts well into the night. Dog Day Afternoon charts those tense, grueling hours with a sharp eye for drama.
Pacino is nothing short of phenominal in the role of Sonny, the tragic would-be robber who is seeking money to finance a boyfriend's sex-change operation. Masterfully paced by director Sidney Lumet, the film maintains a supercharged atmosphere of suspense right down to its hair-raising climax.
