Original 1894 7 1/2 inch x 5 1/4 inch engraving titled A FAMILY OF RED DEER.
The red deer is the largest land-mammal in the UK with a males (stags) standing 42 inches to 54 inches at the shoulder and weighing 198 pounds to 418 pounds. Adult females (hinds) reach a height of 42 inches -to 48 inches at the shoulder and weigh 139 pounds to 265 pounds. Deer on the open hill in Scotland are smaller than those in lowland English woodland.
Engraved by Gustav Ludwig Heinrich Mützel (1839 - 1893). A German artist, famous for his mammal and bird paintings, including the illustrations for the second edition of Alfred Edmund Brehm's ‘Thierleben’ and Richard Lydekker's ‘The Royal Natural History’.
This illustration is taken from ‘The Royal Natural History’ edited by Richard Lydekker and published by Frederick Warne & Co. London and New York, 1894.
