Synopsis
In Judge Sonia "Sonny" Klonsky's courtroom a black man is being tried for the murder of an elderly white woman, the wife of a state senator. It is a bench trial--there is no jury--the prosecution and defense present the case directly to the judge. However, the situation is complicated because the Senator, the defense attorney, the judge, and a covering reporter, are acquaintances from the 1960s, with private ties that may have no place in a controversial case. As the trial unfolds, Turow delves into the personal familial relationships of his primary players, creating a complex emotional novel coupled with a thrilling courtroom drama.

Publisher's Note
The Laws of Our Fathers opens with a spectacular drive-by shooting in one of Kindle County's most notorious drug-plagued housing projects. The victim is an aging white woman who has never been seen there before; within days her son, Nile Eddgar, a probation officer, is charged in connection with the crime. Nile's trial is presided over - and narrated by - Judge Sonia "Sonny" Klonsky, whom Turow's fans will remember from his second novel, The Burden of Proof. It brings together a vivid cast of characters from Sonny's student years during the turbulent sixties, among them Nile's father, Loyell Eddgar, once a leading campus revolutionary, and Sonny's old boyfriend Seth Weissman, who is now a renowned journalist. All have been permanently marked by the heady iconoclasm of their youth; some carry terrible secrets that come to bear on the case at hand in unforeseeable and explosive ways.

Industry reviews
"If `Presumed Innocent' was Turow's big book of the `80s, this seething, panoramic book of interacting characters, historic events and love is his big book of the `90s...`The Laws of our Fathers' must be viewed as Turow's most stunning achievement, and it is certainly his most ambitious effort."
Los Angeles Times Book Review - Edna Buchanan (10/20/1996)

"Novels in which the characters change and develop give great satisfaction. When this combines with strong, intricate plotting, and an exploration of morally complex behavior without cartoon contrivance, there is even greater satisfaction."
Spectator - Harriet Waugh (11/09/1996)

"Splendid...Turow's best so far. It's not only a hair-raising courtroom thriller but also a rich, deeply nuanced story of crime and punishment."
Chicago Sun-Times - Henry Kisor

"A wonderfully gripping mystery...Turow writes marvelous, rewarding thoughtful novels that possess a good chance of being read a hundred years from now."
USA Today - Deirdre Donahue

"Turow's Best Book...No other novel this year is likely to be as thoughtful, as timely and richly detailed, and as satisfying to read."
Philadelphia Inquirer - David Walton

"Beneath the layers of deep legal deviousness, Turow never lets you forget that his characters lived and loved before they ever got dragged into court, and that they have lives to go back to after the final gavel comes down."
Swift

"As the novel gathers momentum it reveals a complex portrait, in which children are forced to live in the shadow of their parents, and chastened middle-aged idealists must reckon with the enthusiasms and sins of their youth."
Ludvigson

"...The novel is less a legal thriller than a meditative examination of the hold that time past exerts over time present, and the tangled relationship between fathers and sons, mothers and daughters....Mr. Turow has succeeded in giving Sonny Klonsky a vivid inner life--and in doing so, defies those critics who criticized his earlier novels for their lack of sympathetic women."
New York Times

"It has been said that authors cannot go wrong with courtroom drama. Few, though, employ the opportunities offered by the genre as confidently as Turow. Nile is given a `bench trial': one without a jury, the function of which is assumed by the judge. We follow the twists and turns of the case through Sonny's narrative, which sometimes explains the niceties of courtroom procedure, at others shares the reader's uncertainty about the direction the evidence is taking. The effect is gripping."
