Seller's Description

Detailed Condtion : please see full description below

DESCRIPTION Well detailed and good quality antique Chinese solid silver pagoda form inkwell with dragon decoration, four legs and four pen holders. Yes, I know, I wondered why only three claws per foot too and propose one or a combination of the following: the Chinese did not care as much about the number of claws as Wikipedia thinks that they did; the piece was made for general export outside of China to places where the number of claws had no meaning and three looked best with four or five too cluttered; the piece was made for the three claw preferring Japanese market that does also enjoy a bit of ink and calligraphy.
SILVERSMITH Wang Hing, a renowned silversmith known for producing high-quality Chinese export silver items. Wang Hing was a prominent name in the world of Chinese export silver during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The name “Wang Hing” was likely a created name, intended to bring good luck and success, rather than the actual name of the business owner.

The firm was established in Canton (now Guangzhou) around 1854 by the wealthy Lo merchant family and known to have been trading from 10 Queen's Road, Hong Kong in 1909. Wang Hing & Co. became renowned for their high-quality silver items, which often featured intricate designs combining traditional Chinese motifs with Western forms.
