1883 Post-Civil War Silver on Copper Tea Set

During  hard times in the 1800s, it was common for those considered affluent who owned silver  to have their possessions recreated over copper and having the excess silver cast off into bouillion to help create needed cash flow, especially prior to and during wars and times of crop failures.

This family heirloom was dated  1883.

It is silver over copper and fully functioning. This process was done so owners could still make full use of these items at formal events without their guests knowing they had been experiencing any financial hardships requiring utilizing silver for conversion to currency. It was also done to help raise money to finance the wars.

Often these sets were also separated into single pieces being given to specific family members, servants or other persons as gift or pay or were sold individually, making finding a matching set with this many intact pieces very rare.

When original family sets were recreated, they were registered and custom recreated per owner and an inventory or stamp number was inscribed on the bottom of each item to identify them as part of a set, who did the recreation and a date of the recreation.Different silversmiths had their own marks to identify where the work was done and numbers to identify the piece to the person who commissioned the work.

This tea set includes the tea pot, coffee  pot, sugar bowl and creamer and tray. The sugar bowl lid also fits on the creamer.

The hinges on  both the tea pot and the coffee pot are intact, which is also rare as these are often sold with loose or damaged hinges, however the ones on this set are fine and functional.

Pictures shown, were taken when set was 'polished clean', however its in my buffet for display and is now a few years later and is tarnishing, so once sold will need to be silver polished again to restore its brilliant patina.

Sets like this are also often sent for recoating of silver to enhance and increase their value, which I have also looked  into and is available should the buyer ever wish to have it done to add to its longevity, as there is a slight worn spot showing on one pot that wont quite shine up as the rest of that pot, which is usually due to multiple past polish cleanings, wear and tear, but in no way affects the beauty or functionality of the pot. Look at the 3rd picture to see the darkened silver or tarnished area.

Sets like this are hard to match up or obtain from one source. They actually sell at auctions for $5000 or  more. 

This set is older than ones I have seen on auction sites and has no listings on replacement parts or reproduction sites!

Its one of a kind, handcrafted and made by a relative silversmith of the famed Rogers family of silversmiths at a small forge  in New England. Its inscription leads to and proves its history!
