"Letters Patent to Richard Smith a Subject of Great Britain of Sherbrooke, County of Sherbrooke, Province Quebec, Domonion of Canada...This Invention is to be considered in the light of an improvement upon a class of propellers shown and described in letters patent of the United States issued to myself on the seventh day of June, 1881, in which one or more folding blades or vanes, expanding when driven in one direction, create resistance upon or to the water to propel the vessel and folding on the return or retreat stroke...".
