These are great analog to digital converters. They were made by Shin Kin Electronics of Taiwan for Radio Shack and other private label companies. Radio Shack sold them for $40 but some other private label companies sold them for as much as $80.
Inside the plastic case there is a totally enclosed metal housing providing excellent shielding.
This product accepts stereo analog audio input on red (right channel) and white (left channel) RCA connectors and converts it to s/pdif digital audio for output on both a black RCA connector (Coax digital) as well as a Toslink optical connector.
You can ignore the composite to s-video conversion features since analog video is a thing of the past but the analog audio to PCM and s/pdif optical audio conversion is excellent. Far better than anything we have seen at many times the cost.
Our company manufactures the Felston DD740 Digital Audio Delay for lip-sync correction (and DD340 and DD540 before it) and bought a quantity of these A/D Converters back when we introduced the DD540. Since our products only delay "digital" audio we thought there would be many customers who would need to convert "analog" audio to digital audio for input to our products.
Some did, but most of our DD740 customers today have a source with digital audio (PCM or s/pdif optical) and don't need a converter.
So, we have decided to reduce our stock of A/D Converters and our loss can be your gain if you need a top quality A/D Converter.
