Album Notes
Personnel includes: Peter Tosh, Bob Marley (vocals, guitar); Mick Jagger (vocals).Producers: Peter Tosh, C.S. Dodd, Robert Shakespeare.Compilation producer: Bruce Dickinson.Includes liner notes by Native Wayne Jobson.Digitally remastered by Chris Athens (Sterling Sound, New York, New York).Although he never achieved the international crossover success of ex-Wailer mate Bob Marley, Peter Tosh's contribution to modern music cannot be denied. Though he was murdered in 1987 in his hometown of Kingston, Tosh's music lives on through this compilation of his best work."Get Up, Stand Up," the freedom anthem originally recorded by the Wailers, is given Tosh's personal touch. "Stepping Razor," from EQUAL RIGHTS, tells of his tough teen years in Kingston. Tosh, always the rebel, speaks for all the oppressed people of the world on "Downpressor Man." EQUAL's title track reminds us there can be no peace without justice. Tosh was raised a Christian but later took up the Rasta religion and extolls the virtues of ganga smoking on the title tracks to LEGALIZE IT and BUSH DOCTOR. The later was released on Rolling Stones Records, and also features "Don't Look Back (You Gotta Walk and)" with Mick Jagger. "Mystery Babylon," an unreleased song for Tosh completists, is a reworking of "Babylon Queendom." SCROLLS is the perfect introductory disc to this highly influential artist. Peter Tosh was a freedom fighter with a soulful voice whose message lives on.
