Album Notes
Portastatic includes: Mac McCaughan.Additional personnel includes: Jonathan Marx, Jerry Kee, Matthew McCaughan.Personnel: Jonathan Marx (clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, organ, percussion); Matt McCaughan (drums, percussion); Jerry Kee (percussion).Recording information: Duck Kee Studios, Mebane, NC (1996).Photographers: Laura Ballance; Mac McCaughan. It wouldn't be entirely unfair to think of Portastatic as a kinder. gentler Superchunk. After all, they're both the love children of Mac McCaughan. And what's a guy supposed to do when he's got more melodies running through his head than one band can perform? On Portastaic's third full length there are guest appearances by Jonathan Marx on clarinet, sax and trumpet and Mac's brother, Matt on drums. Otherwise it's mostly McCaughan's solo outing, sounding pretty much like it was recorded with whatever happened to be lying around his apartment. It has a casual and intimate feel, topped off with Big Mac's endearing and nasal yelp.
