Obv: ΦΟΥΡΝΟΙ ΠΙΡΙΛΛΟΣ
Rev.: Nude St George slaying the dragon right, 1879 in exergue.
It is expected that this token is for the New year cakes. Following tradition a coin was put in a holiday cake, which were sold by the chain of the company. In fact local bakeries instead of gold coin put a token usually with images of a sovereign of the United Kingdom, part of which the territory was for decades.
Pirillos was established in 1930 and till 1970s there was just one bakery in Kiti. The inscription on the Obv. is in plural, that is why the token is later. In practice nowadays Pirillos used other tokens with type of gold sovereign of Victoria with portrait of Her majesty. Most probably 1879 refers to the year of the first Cyprus modern coinage. Being so, there is large chance that the date of this token is 1979. And the token is commemorating the centenary of Cyprus coinage. This may have sense, for Pirillos is founded in period of intensive circulation of the first Cyprus piastre, that is why there were people who remember in practice these fist coins with common date 1879. Interesting high level of performance of the reverse, where even the initials to the right of date are visible. Presumably rare.
