Some Information About RatherRuss
Giving you a little more insight into the seller.
In 1969, instead of going to Woodstock, Rather Russ headed off to the magic land of Berkeley, California and with Richard and David (long out of the music biz) started RATHER RIPPED RECORDS on the Northside of the UC Campus. Taking on new partner, Doug (also long out of the biz) invited Patti Smith to play her lst west coast show upstairs around 1975, Beserkeley Records rockers Gary Phillips and Greg Kihn worked at the store. Tom Petty interviewed one of our managers, The Residents, Eddie Money, Roky Erickson, and Horslips were a few of the bands who played our yearly birthday parites. Space music (Amon Duul, Klaus Schulze, Area & tons of others) outsold arena rockers at this store, as did the punk movement, Dead Kennedys, Crime, Jars, Sex Pistols, Clash, Billy Idol and more came through, sold records and signed autographs, as did the young Police, Ian Dury, Blondie and other new wavers. From these humble beginnings, a mail order was born which has reached the entire world for many years and in many locations.
Recently Rather Ripped Records settled down in Rather Russ' hometown of Pittsburgh and continued the store tradition at Trader Jack's Flea Market every Saturday and Sunday where personalized insults are still available along with much music, and here on eBid, sales of records, cds, dvds, Vintage Tees and Posters, Books and PR kits still continue. In 2011, we celebrated our 40th year of existence (although the main store was closed over 30 years ago in Berkeley) with a 40th reunion (see our Facebook page for pics and the story of Petty hiring Ray as one of our managers). We are currently contemplating another party (well over 100 showed up for the lst one) come October. In the meantime, we are at Trader Jack's in Bridgeville every weekend and on the web here at eBid.net everyday. Drop a lline if you have questions, stories about our history, a new band we should know about, or just to say hello.....and best yet, buy a bit of music while you're here, Thanks, Russ
