Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung was a weekly, heavily illustrated magazine published from 1892 to 1945. Abbreviated to BIZ it was Germany's first mass-market magazine and became famous for its pioneering use of photography.
This is a complete run from 1922, the beginning of the Weimar period and at a time when Germany was still recovering from the First World War, the failed revolution of 1919, its newly imposed democracy was under attack from numerous paramilitary groups and the country as a whole was suffering from the punitive effects of the Treaty of Versailles.
These issues feature numerous personalities of the time including Henry Ford, Albert Einstein, Richard Strauss, Lloyd George, Mustafa Kemal Pasha (later Kemal Atatürk) who become the founder of the Republic of Turkey, and Mussolini whose infamous march on Rome which led to Mussolini being made Prime Minister and then dictator of Italy is featured on the cover of issue No 46, November 12th. (see photos)
Also featured extensively is the murder of Walther Rathenau, a Jewish German industrialist and politician who was involved in opening up trade with Soviet Russia, something right-wing nationalist groups regarded as treasonous and the work of a revolutionary. As a result Rathenau was assassinated in June 1922 by the right-wing and antisemitic group Organisation Consul formed by members of the Freikorps unit Marinebrigade Ehrhardt.
All 53 issues for 1922 are here and cover all aspects of German cultural and political life. Also included are the last four issues of 1921 which are bound into the same volume.
This is a massive, bound volume consisting of all 53 issues totalling 1052 pages plus the four issues from 1921 and is 65 mm thick, so it resembles an old and rather large bible.
The paper is a bit yellowed with age and there is the odd page that has a tear here and there but not many and there are also a few pencil or pen scribbles, usually next to crosswords. Again nothing much.
Aside from this the magazines are fine and provide a fabulous document and visual reference to a long lost period of German history and cultural life in Berlin.
Very rare. 1052 pages Issues 1 to 53, 1922 (+ last four issues of 1921) of the iconic BIZ magazine. Publisher, Verlag Ullstein Berlin SW 68 Size: 360mm high x 255mm wide Most of the issues are in good to very good condition, some have minor age-related yellowing and some pages are a bit worn and scuffed at the outside edges
