Seller's Description
Dawson Creek BC Souvenir Teaspoon Tea Spoon Mile 0 Post Alaska Highway Charm
I acquired this spoon from an estate sale.
The spoon is topped with a gold coloured (possibly plated) charm depicting the "Mile 0 Post" on the world famous Alaska Highway.
The bowl of the spoon is engraved: Dawson Creek B. C. [British Columbia, Canada]
The rear of the spoon is marked: Japan.
The spoon measures 3-3/4 inches (9.6 cm) long X 13/16 inch (2 cm) wide (At the widest part of the spoon bowl and the spoon top). The charm is just over 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) tall.
The Alaska Highway (also known as the Alaskan Highway, Alaska-Canadian Highway, or ALCAN Highway) was constructed during World War II for the purpose of connecting the contiguous United States to Alaska through Canada. It begins at the junction with several Canadian highways in Dawson Creek, British Columbia (mile or KM 0), and runs to Delta Junction, Alaska, via Whitehorse, Yukon. Completed in 1942 at a length of approximately 2,700 kilometres (1,700 mi), as of 2012 it is 2,232 km (1,387 mi) long. The difference in distance is due to constant reconstruction of the highway, which has rerouted and straightened out numerous sections. The highway was opened to the public in 1948.
Legendary over many decades for being a rough, challenging drive, the highway is now paved over its entire length.
An informal system of historic mileposts developed over the years to denote major stopping points; Delta Junction, Alaska, USA, at the end of the highway, makes reference to its location at "Historic Milepost 1422." It is at this point that the Alaska Highway meets the Richardson Highway, which continues 155 km (96 mi) to the city of Fairbanks. While Dawson Creek, British Columbia, Canada is "Milepost 0".
