Noted Italian cinematographer G.R. Aldo (born Aldo Graziati) began his film career as an actor in French films and then as a still photographer, a position he kept for nearly 20 years. He then worked his way up to assistant cameraman, then camera operator, until he finally secured the position of full-fledged cinematographer. He shot La Terra Trema (1948) to great critical acclaim. He worked with the finest of Italian directors, such as Vittorio De Sica and Luchino Visconti, and was responsible for the photography on such classics as Umberto D. (1952), Miracle in Milan (1951) and Indiscretion (1953).

Edgar (von Stroheim) and Théa (Vernac) are the guardians of a penitentiary fortress. The prison is built on an island in the Adriatic Sea where the couple live with their daughter. Family relationships are very tense, just like the austere atmosphere here. One day, the young woman falls in love with a prisoner and Théa receives the visit of one of her former lovers ... The fragile situation quickly degenerates.
