Seller's Description
Chinese Souvenir Teaspoon Tea Spoon Sampan Silver Plated 4-5/8" long
I acquired this spoon from an estate sale.
This Chinese themed spoon is topped with a casting of a Sampan (Chinese sail powered boat). The sails on the boat show a green and red tinge to the sailcloth.
There are no manufactures markings on the spoon. I believe the spoon to be silver plated as there are signs of tarnish on the spoon.
I have no guess to the spoons age.
The spoon measures 4-5/8 inches (11.7 cm) long X 15/16 inch (2.3 cm) wide (At the widest part of the spoon bowl) and weighs about 8 gr.
The spoon is in good condition with light surface scratches. (See pictures).
From Wikipedia:
Sampan:
A sampan is a relatively flat bottomed Chinese wooden boat. Some sampans include a small shelter on board, and may be used as a permanent habitation on inland waters. Sampans are generally used for transportation in coastal areas or rivers, and are often used as traditional fishing boats. It is unusual for a sampan to sail far from land as they do not have the means to survive rough weather.
The word "sampan" comes from the original Hokkien term for the boats, 三板 (sam pan), literally meaning "three planks", although this term is no longer used in modern Chinese. The name referred to the hull design, which consists of a flat bottom (made from one plank) joined to two sides (the other two planks). The design closely resembles Western hard chine boats like the scow or punt.
