The mission: to rescue an important American General from the hands of the German high command. The obstacle: the most inaccessible fortress in the world. British Major Smith (Burton) leads the team, which includes Lieutenant Schaffter (Eastwood), an American Ranger specializing in assassination, and Mary Ellison (Mary Ure), Smith's beautiful contact. But from the beginning, the plan is jeopardized by a ruthless German double agent. And it soon becomes chillingly clear that no one can be trusted.
