UNUSUAL RARE ANTIQUE MILITARY PEWTER 15"-TALL URN TROPHY OR CUP WITH LID (P6)
Great unusual antique pewter "something"...is it a trophy? an urn for the fallen? I cannot find anything similar to this on or google. Photos 2 & 3 show a crouched soldier with weapon on top of the lid in what looks like 1800s British Army uniform....so this is definitely a military piece but what is it? If it was a trophy or urn for a dead soldier then there would surely be names and dates on the body but there isnt. I bought this in auction and they had no information either. The body has engravings of racing chariots. Photos 4 & 10 show a dent on the body but thats the only body dent. Photos 11 & 12 show what looks like the original handles have been cut off. No makers marks anywhere. Style of cup looks circa 1850s to 1890s but could be 1900s to 1920s as pewter was used a lot in that period.
Measures 38.25cm tall x 11cm wide (body). Weighs 830 grams.
