Säljarens Beskrivning
Original 1890 lithograph titled TURRET, ELGIN, AND WINDOWS, NEWARK CASTLE (on Clyde).
Newark Castle is a well-preserved castle sited on the south shore of the estuary of the River Clyde in Port Glasgow, Inverclyde, Scotland. The castle was built in 1478 by George Maxwell when he inherited the Barony of Finlanstone (Finlaystone) in the parish of Kilmacolm. The original castle had a tower house within a walled enclosure or barmkin entered through a large gatehouse. All that remains of the outer defensive wall is from one of the original corner towers. It is thought that there would have been a hall and ancillary buildings such as a bakehouse and brew house inside the walled enclosure.
Drawn by Francis Thomas Dollman (1812 - 1899). Francis Thomas Dollman was articled to Augustus Charles Pugin from 1827 to 1832. He was renowned for his skill as a draughtsman and assisted Pugin with the plates for ''Examples of Gothic Architecture'. In 1833 he then moved to the office of George Basevi where he remained for twelve years until Basevi’s death in 1845. He commenced independent practice in London in 1846, and was best known for his books, which followed the Pugin format, beginning with 'Examples of Ancient Pulpits in England', 1848. He was elected ARIBA on 4 January 1846 with the influential backing of G G Scott, Benjamin Ferrey, Sydney Smirke and C C Nelson, and was librarian of the RIBA from 1863 to 1886. He was briefly in partnership with William Taprell Allen, from February 1874 to December 1878.
Lithograph from a disbound copy of ‘An Analysis of Ancient Domestic Architecture’ by F.T. Dollman & J.R. Robbins. Published by B.T. Batsford, 52 High Holborn, London, 1890.
