You just knew Shaft was going to be something different from the opening scene. The camera pans down Times Square in New York City with all its movie theaters and then Shaft, Richard Roundtree emerges from a subway station and the wah wah guitar of Isaac Hayes’ theme song starts. Shaft is walking across the street and a car almost hits him and he flips off the driver. Yes, as the song would say “Shaft is a bad mother…” The movie was an affirmation of black masculinity and provided an African American hero when both were in short supply in a racist American society. Made by famed photographer Gordon Parks Shaft was not going to be your average Blaxploitation film. It was a game changer with its character and its style and its music all of which proved unforgettable.
The film focuses upon Shaft a private detective who’s hired by a major crime boss in Harlem named Bumpy Jones played by Moses Gunn to find his daughter who it turns out had been taken by the Italian mafia who want to muscle into Bumpy’s territory. Along the way Shaft gets the women in an affirmation of black manhood that was derided and targeted by American society, he runs into a black power group showing the politics of the day, he gets to play action star as when he repels down the side of a building and crashes through a window, and he gets to punch and shoot whites which symbolically was very important for blacks at the time to show that they weren’t always just servants or slaves or Uncle Toms in cinema. This was what made the film so enjoyable and important. Shaft wasn’t just a detective he proved to be a hero and inspiration.
