Set of 13 Zane Grey Black's Readers Service Collectible Volumes

These are rare volumes from publisher Black's Readers Service

All volumes are red clothbound hardcovers with extended cream spine. Spines have a red and black title block with gilt titles and decorations.

All books have spines which are darkly tanned, tanned pages and more darkly tanned endpapers, pencilled notation on fep and rep and faded topstain. Many volumes also have a tiny notation in the top corner of inside front cover.

Each volume is detailed below with the most recent copyright date of the volume in parenthesis.

1.  30,000 On the Hoof:  (1940)  304 pages.
From page 1:  "General Crook and his regiment of the Western Division of the U.S. Army were cutting a road through the timber on the rim of the Mogollon Mesa above the Tonto Basin.  They had as captives a number of Apache Indians, braves, squaws, and children, whom they were taking to be placed under guard on the reservation."
Edgewear, bumped and worn heel of spine and back bottom corner, soil to covers with a spot on back cover, light spot on first page and outside pages, small notation inside front cover.  Pastedown is split at half title page.

2.  Nevada:  (1928) 365 pages.
"As his goaded horse plunged into the road, Nevada looked back over his shoulder.  The lane he had plowed through the crowd let him see back into the circle where the three men lay prostrate.  The blue smoke from his gun was rising slowly, floating away.  Ben Ide's face shone white and convulsed in the sunlight."
Bumped and worn corners, bumped head and heel of spine, tiny notation inside front cover, light soil to covers.

3.  Stairs of Sand:  (1928)  321 pages.
From page 1:  "The Canyon, with its gleaming walls, dark as ebony on the shady side, gold where the desert sun burned, afforded some relief from the heat, if not from the sight of the infernal, endless sand - sand blowing, shifting, heaving life billows of a silver sea, rolling away dune after dune, rising in steps, beautiful, mystic, treacherous and alluring."
Bumped and worn corners and head and heel of spine, soil to covers.

4.  Sunset Pass:  (1931)  349 pages.
From page 1:  "The dusty overland train pulled into Wagon-tongue about noon of a sultry June day.  The dead station appeared slow in coming to life.  Mexicans lounging in the shade of the platform did not move."
Penciled notation on fep; inked checkmark inside front cover; bumped and worn corners and head and heel of spine, a couple mottled areas and one small stain or ink transfer on back.

5.  The Border Legion:  (1944)  365 pages.
From page 1:  "Joan Randle reined in her horse on the crest of the cedar ridge, and with remorse and dread beginning to knock at her heart she gazed before her at the wild and looming mountain range."
Bumped and worn corners and bumped head and heel of spine, small spots of foxing on inside cover and fep, soil in the margin of the half title page to page 7 and light soil to covers.

6.  The Drift Fence:  (1933) 314 pages.
From page 1:  "Molly Dunn sat waiting on the rickety old porch of Enoch Summers' store in the village of West Fork.  For once she was oblivious to the approach of the lean-faced, long-legged young back-woodsman who lounged there with the elders.  Molly was sixteen and on the eve of a great adventure."
Bumped corners and head and heel of spine, worn front corners, soil to covers, and we noted 7 creased page corners, small spot in the margins of pages 4-5 and on pages 13-15.

7.  The Forlorn River:  (1927)  338 pages.
From page 1:  "Ben Ide named this lonely wandering stream Forlorn River because it was like his life."
Spot on front cover, bumped head and heel of spine, bumped and worn corners.  Spot in the margin of pages 69-75.

8.  The Hash Knife Outfit:  (1929)  323 pages.
From page 1:  "It was a rainy November night down on the Cottonwood.  The wind complained in the pines outside the cabin and whispered under the eaves...  A coffee pot steamed on some coals; browned biscuits showed in an open iron oven; and thick slices of beef mingled a savory odor with the smoke.  The men, however, were busy on pipes and cigarettes, evidently having finished supper."
Bumped and worn corners and head and heel of spine, tiny notation inside front cover, some soil in the margins of pages 20-23 and page 81, soil to covers.

9.  The Mysterious Rider:  (1949)  336 pages.
From page 1:  "A September sun, losing some of its heat if not its brilliance, was dropping low in the west over the black Colorado ranger.  Purple haze began to thicken in the timbered notches...  A girl rode along the slope, with gaze on the sweep and range and color of the mountain fastness that was her home."
Title block on spine is quite rubbed; spine is bumped and worn at heel; bumped and worn corners; we note stains in the margins of at least 10 pages and stains in the text area of at least four pages; small stain on bottom of book.

10.  The Rainbow Trail:  (1943)  373 pages.
From page 1:  "Shefford halted his tired horse and gazed with slowly realizing eyes.  A league-long slope of sage rolled and billowed down to Red Lake, a dry red basin, denuded and glistening, a hollow in the desert, a lonely and desolate door to the vast, wild and broken upland beyond."
Penciled notation on fep; pastedown is split at title page, bumped and worn corners and head and heel of spine, a couple mottled ares and one small stain or ink transfer on back.  There is a stain in the top margin of page 2, the top margin of pages 52-57, the bottom margin of pages 142-156, left margin of page 182 and the gutter between pages 182 and 183.

11.  The U.P. Trail:  (1948)  409 pages.
From page 1:  "In the early sixties a trail led from the broad Missouri, swirling yellow and turgid between its green-groved borders, for miles and miles out upon the grassy Nebraska plains, turning westward over the undulating prairie, with its swales and billows and long, winding liens of cottonwoods to show, vast heave of rising ground - Wyoming - where the herds of buffalo grazed and the wolf was lord and the campfire of the trapper sent up its curling blue smoke from beside some lonely stream; on an done over he barren lens of eternal monotony..."
Bumped and worn corners and bumped head and heel of spine, soil to covers, front pastedown split and book is shaken.  The title block on the spine is very rubbed.

12.  Wild Horse Mesa:  (1928)  365 pages.
From page 1:  "The mystery and insurmountable nature of Wild Horse Mesa had usurped many a thoughtful hour of Chane Weymer's lonely desert life in Utah.  Every wandering rider had a strange story to tell about his vast tableland.  But Chane had never before seen it from so lofty and commanding a height as this to which Toddy Nokin, the Piute, had led him; not had there ever before been so impelling a fascination as that engendered by the Indian."
Bumped head and heel of spine and corners, light soil to covers.

13.  Wyoming:  (1932)  244 pages.
From page 1:  "When Martha Ann Dixon found herself on the open Nebraska road she realized with a shock that at last her innate propensity for running away from home had definitely materialized.  She pinched herself...  It was true.  She was here, and her face was turned to the West!"
Bumped and worn head and heel of spine, worn corners, tiny notation inside front cover.  Front pastedown is cracked and darkened; back pastedown is also darkened, probably as a result of the glue used during production, covers are soiled.

QUESTIONS?

Please ask any questions prior to your purchase.

We do not accept Offers.  We do not respond to offers made.  The price is what it is.  We’d love it if you would pay more, because we need a bookmobile, but we won’t take less.

IS THERE SOMETHING YOU WANT TO TELL US?

Have we misspelled something?  Please let us know.  Is a photograph missing?  Please let us know.  Do you have information you think we should add to our listing?  Do you want to share some information about a relative who signed a book we have on offer or a recipe we highlighted or a historical note?  We appreciate your interest and we’d love to hear from you.

SHIPPING AND HANDLING:

Every item has calculated shipping. Please choose your preferred method.

Shipping includes USPS tracking where available.

All shipments are subject to US Postal Service regulations.

When we ship the item, you will receive a message with shipping information and USPS Tracking Number (where applicable.)

Please visit www.usps.com to check the tracking of your package for shipments within the United States.  End to end tracking is not available for most shipments outside the United States.

GIFTS:

Please let us know if you’re sending a gift, because we will be including a receipt with the price of the item.  You may not want us to include the receipt.  We’re happy to include our gift card (at no cost) or your note or message (also at no cost.)  We will not send anonymous gifts.

PAYMENT:

Payment must be made in US funds and by PayPal.

CONTACTING YOU AFTER YOUR PURCHASE:

Occasionally, we have questions after your purchase.  Sometimes we need to confirm a shipping address.  If we have questions, we will contact you through ebid’s messaging system. Please check your ebid Messages and your email or shipment of your item may be delayed.  It is possible that your purchase may be cancelled if we don’t hear back from you.

BUYERS LOCATED OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES - PLEASE NOTE:

Receipt of your item may be delayed if it has to go through custom inspection in your country.  Occasionally, this adds days or weeks to delivery.

Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.

Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.

Customs fees are normally charged by the shipping company or collected when you pick the item up. These fees are not additional shipping charges.

We won't under-value merchandise or mark the item as a gift on customs forms. Doing that is against U.S. and international laws.

During peak shipping times, it may take weeks to have your item clear customs.  We’ve had some items arrive in Europe in a week, but a package to South America once took six weeks to arrive!  Again, you’ll have to check with the customs office in your country if your item hasn’t been received.

Restrictions in your country may not allow us to ship certain items.

Many countries do not allow shipments of coins or precious metals, for example.  Some media, including computer software, music CDs or DVDs may be restricted for sale outside the United States.

VHS and DVDs are formatted differently for different countries.

If you are purchasing a VHS videotape, please note the format your machine requires before you make your purchase.  Most of our tapes are NTSC format (it is specified in the listing what the format is) which will not work in most video players in Europe and Australia.  We routinely contact anyone overseas who purchases a VHS video to ask them to check if their machine can play an NTSC tape before we ship.

Many DVDs also have a specific format by country.  If you are purchasing a DVD, please make sure the DVD is a format that will play in your machine.

NO RETURN, NO CANCELLATION POLICY:

We no longer accept returns or cancellations due a history of fraudulent claims.

OUR TEXT, IMAGES AND OUR COPYRIGHT:

Our photographs and text, including titles and subtitles, are copyrighted and may not be used, copied or redistributed.  Quotes are for illustrative purposes only and remain the property of their respective copyright holders.

Civil and criminal penalties apply to the theft of copyrighted material.

If you see our photographs or text elsewhere on eBid or online, please let us know.

We’ve found our “stolen” photographs and text on other e-commerce websites many times.  In order to help reduce fraud and image theft, you’ll notice that most of our photographs have our logo or other label appearing on each image which obscures a small part of the item.

It is possible that anyone who uses stolen images or text may not even have the item they are trying to sell and that their intention is to defraud you.  We don’t want anyone to use our images or text to try and sell you something they don’t have.

Please be savvy and safe while shopping online.  Your local public library should be able to help you find great resources to protect yourself and your family while shopping online.

Thank you for reading this.  You are the kind of educated consumer with whom we want to do business and whom we aim very hard to please.

We appreciate your looking at our listing! Your purchase supports libraries, literacy and lifelong learning.
