• General Comments: This is the type of publication handed out at school or university careers fairs in the 1970’s. It covers different officer levels in the scientific civil service and what their roles would be. The scientific establishment work places described include: The British Museum, the Natural History Museum, Civil Service Department, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries in Scotland, Department of Education and Science, Department of Health and Social Security, Department of the Environment, Department of Trade and Industry, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Forestry Commission, Home Office, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, Ministry of Defence, National Gallery, Research Councils, and the Royal Mint. There are some black and white plates inside of the road research lab, a radar establishment, a wind tunnel, a van de Graff spark generator at the National Physical Laboratory, electron microscope pictures of pollen, a Comet 4c jet, a weather satellite image, a Concorde under construction, a tank in Canada, and an old fashioned computer engineering design terminal. At the back of the booklet there is a more detailed table of the different establishments you can work at, a list of contact addresses, and an index. This would be useful for someone who is studying the history of the British Civil Service or maybe a nice gift for someone, now retired from one of the establishments mentioned here.
